Environmental Concerns Grow Hybrid Car Sector
As concerns over the environment continue to grow, so does the hybrid vehicle sector - as seen at this year's Hybridfest in Madison, WI. The hybrid, electric car show showcases automakers' solutions for sustainable transportation and highlights issues such as climate change and air quality.
During the event, General Motors (GM) unveiled one of its solutions, a two-mode Chevrolet Hybrid - a vehicle with two electric motors due to be released in late 2007. GM and other car companies also showcased a series of concept vehicles known as plug-in hybrids. By enabling drivers to charge their automobile's battery at home, plug-in hybrids can run on an electric charge longer and use less gas. While hybrids account for 2 percent of all new cars today, GM officials say this number could quadruple within the next five years.
