In Round Seven, the top four made a clean getaway with Marcus Ericsson (Fortec Motorsport) putting pressure on Henry Surtees (Carlin Motorsport) in second, giving race leader Sato some breathing space. The battle for second allowed Kral to catch the pair and, as Surtees struggled with understeer following an incident earlier in the race, Ericsson needed no other invitation to place his car up the inside. Kral also capitalized, following Ericsson through to claim third but the pair were unable to catch Sato before the chequered flag came out.
“It’s fantastic” Sato smiled, “I can’t find all the words to explain it! I felt a little nervous as Ericsson was catching me towards the end but it was a good race”
Ericsson commented: “It’s so hard to overtake at Croft so I just stuck behind Surtees to let him know | was there in the hope he would make a mistake. He did and I was able to get up the inside but unfortunately didn’t have time to catch Sato.”
In Round Eight, Ericsson seemed to have the win secured but a last corner challenge from Kral left Ericsson on the grass. Ericsson was able to re-join in time to finish second ahead of Surtees, but was clearly disappointed to have lost the victory at the final corner of the race. Kral had made impressive progress to move up from fifth on the grid to take his fourth win of the season and remain top race winner in 2007.
Kral said: “I wasn’t happy with third in Round Seven but I made a good start in Round Eight. I was matching Ericsson’s lap times for a while but I started to gain on him in the last few laps. I’m really happy to get another win, I’m slowly moving up the Championship table!”
Ericsson’s two second place finishes gave him both Rookie Cup victories with Adrian Quaife-Hobbs (Fortec Motorsport) and Carlos Huertas (Double R Racing) behind him for Round Seven, sixth and ninth overall, and Surtees and Quaife-Hobbs and behind him in Round Eight, third and sixth overall.
The Formula BMW UK Championship returns to the north for Rounds Nine and Ten, heading to Oulton Park in Cheshire in three weeks time where Ericsson will be looking to extend his 25-point lead even further.
Results – Round 7 – 15 Laps = 31.88 miles.
