UNDERSTEER PROBLEMS CAUSE QUALIFYING HEADACHE FOR BRATT
Oxon racing driver Will Bratt faces an uphill battle during the fifth and sixth rounds of the 2005 Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit tomorrow, after car set-up difficulties blunted his qualifying charge at the Kent venue earlier today.
The Adderbury teenager, who currently leads the B4 Group Graduate Cup class of the series by nine points in his maiden season of single-seater action, was bitterly disappointed with the outcome of the two 20-minute sessions which determine the grid for tomorrow’s races – but he’s still upbeat about his chances.
Over the two qualifying periods, Will endured his most difficult outings of the season so far as he fought against understeer problems with his Formula Renault UK car. But he still managed to be second quickest of the Graduate Cup runners.
Speaking on the day’s qualifying, Will said: “Early in the first session things were going well but then the red flags came out to clear away a car that had gone off the circuit. We thought we’d be able to deliver a good time but then the car started to suffer from oversteer in the middle of the corners. We’re looking forward to tomorrow though.”
With less than a second covering the top 23 drivers in round five qualifying, Will was just 0.771 seconds adrift of the NGK Laser Platinum Pole Position time set by overall series leader Oliver Jarvis, underlining the competitiveness of the championship.
However, the grid for round six is even tighter with only 0.766 covering the entire field of cars – meaning Sunday’s races look likely to be some of the most action packed Formula Renault UK rounds at Brands Hatch in recent history.
The first of tomorrow’s 24-lap races is scheduled to begin at 10.40 while the second is expected to begin at 17.25.
